How Metro Ethernet Can Benefit Your Network
For years now computer networks have relied on Ethernet for certain kinds of connections. It was originally designed to forward information to a particular part of a network, and is the dominant protocol in local area network (LAN) setups for most businesses. The Metro Ethernet connection is the primary network span that connects businesses or subscribers to the Wide Area Network (WAN).
From the beginning it was and still is economical and cost effective, and has provided enough bandwidth to adequately serve most local networks. Bandwidth, however, is not the only consideration. These customers can include both residential and business enterprise. The portion of the metro that actually connects to a customer is called the "last mile", or that last portion of a carrier network's link.
Carrier Ethernet uses high-bandwidth for access to the Internet in addition to LAN connections between different groups within business or government networks, and is usually utilized in one of three different ways. The first is conventional Ethernet, also called "pure" Ethernet. However, it was not originally designed to be used within metropolitan-area networks, and when employed in that manner may run into problems with scale, manageability, and reliability.
The second is known as SDH, or Synchronous Digital Hierarchy. This is an effective system if there is already an infrastructure in place which can help to manage bandwidth when traffic fluctuates. It may not, however, be as flexible as Ethernet over Multi-protocol Label Switching, or MPLS. This is the most expensive of the three types of Ethernet, but it is also the most flexible and can avoid common bottlenecks that can occur when many small networks are connected to a larger single network.
When these types of technologies are combined in within a metropolitan area network (MAN) they are collectively called Metro Ethernet. While this may seem to be an excellent overall solution to universal network access, there are still considerations when choosing which type of access is best for any business. Overall costs versus bandwidth may seem to be a simple choice, but there is an extremely wide variety of technologies available, many of which are designed for specific problems in specific types of transmissions.
For any business it is important to remember that all of them ultimately rely on a LEC, or local exchange carrier, which transmits that last mile of connection to any site. When failures occur, they are often within a local central office. The condition of the local transmission lines plays an extremely important role in reliability, and it is important to choose that carrier carefully, and to be fully aware of any infrastructure limitations that may adversely affect your business.
Other considerations include where your actual physical offices are. A business may have both urban and countryside branches. Many times WANs are configured with MLPS as the backbone of the network, with Metro Ethernet as the interconnecting segments. It is very important to critically assess the needs of a particular kind of business before making a choice. Some cities, such as Hong Kong, have already installed metro Ethernet which is currently serving millions of businesses and homes. The Metro system is still evolving in many areas of the world, and will undoubtedly play a key role in future development of network Internet access.
